How to Start a Podcast in Typepad

by Justin Lukasavige on April 22, 2010

I really need to preface this post post with a very important message…

Unless you have a very compelling reason to stick with Typepad, do not podcast in Typepad. Instead, go to wordpress.org.

Alright I said it. I hope you took me seriously. I would even consider changing your entire website over to wordpress if you’re serious about audio or podcasting. I had a compelling reason to figure this out and directions, to my knowledge, don’t exist anywhere online to do what I’m about to share with you.

It’s a very straight-forward process on wordpress, but not on typepad. The directions are nearly identical in each but with many more work-arounds for typepad. I’ll point our where each are the same in a bit.

  1. Create a podcast category in your typepad account.
  2. Enable RSS feeds to be created from categories within typepad.
  3. Create a test post and preview it.
  4. Click on the podcast category at the bottom of the post.
  5. At the top left you should see an RSS feed created for your podcast category. You need to copy this for the feedburner step in a minute. (Your RSS feed should end in /atom.xml).
  6. When you create a post you’ll probably want a flash player so people can listen without downloading or leaving your page. There are a few out there but here’s the code to paste a google player.
    <embed allowscriptaccess=”never” bgcolor=”#ffffff” flashvars=”playerMode=embedded” quality=”best” src=”http://www.google.com/reader/ui/3247397568-audio-player.swf?audioUrl=http://media.libsyn.com/media/freeagent/FreeAgentUnderground20100421-MakeaSacrifice.MP3″ type=”application/x-shockwave-flash” wmode=”window” width=”320″ height=”27″>

You’ll find the link for a show embedded there. You need to overwrite that with a link to your show. You can upload and post files directly into typepad but if you become popular your host company will probably shut you down. Plus, you don’t have any stats on those listens. Instead, you libsyn to host your files.

  7. Also put a link to the actual file and say something like right-click to download. This is the file that gets included in your RSS feed and is sent to iTunes. Here’s the code:<a href=”http://media.libsyn.com/media/freeagent/FreeAgentUnderground20100421-MakeaSacrifice.MP3″ title=”Free Agent Underground Show”>Right-click to download</a>

From here on out the directions are the same for wordpress and typepad.

  8. Sign in to feedburner using your google account.
  9. Paste your RSS feed and check the box indicating you are a podcaster.
  10. Complete the rest of the info on the page describing your show. Upload a 600×600 cover for your show that will display in iTunes. You’ll need to host that somewhere and provide the link to feedburner.
  11. Click ‘Edit Feed Details’ at the top left of your page.
  12. Your feed will be in this format: http://feeds.feedburner.com/xxxx where the x’s need to be replaced. You can get creative there if you like.
  13. Take that address and open iTunes and click on the iTunes store on the left of the page. Assuming they don’t change their software, scroll all the way to the bottom and click on podcast on the left. Then click on submit a podcast on the right.
  14. Paste the code into the box on the next page and sign in with your iTunes account. You’ll receive an email notifying you within a few hours or days that it’s been reviewed and added.
  15. To add to Zune, go to zune.net.
  16. Click on podcasts on the lower left.
  17. Click on ‘Submit a podcast’ on the left of the next page.
  18. You won’t receive an email from them. Check back and search to see that it was added.

Again, it’s much easier on wordpress and you have many more options for free plugins that will rock your page. The process is somewhat similar on wordpress.

The podcast I’ve created in Typepad is the Free Agent Underground.
